a game for the whole community
We are proud of our involvement in the local community. By opening our bowling greens to schools, youth organisations, care homes, and community groups, we offer a welcoming community hub which enables generations to mix, friendships to form, and health and wellbeing to be supported. .
For children and youth groups such as Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts, we offer opportunities for them to develop coordination, confidence, teamwork, and respect for others in a fun, outdoor setting. For this, we use a special type of soft bowl ( "bowls buddies" ) which allows those getting to know the game for the first time, to do so in safety.
For people living with dementia and those in care homes, we offer the opportunity to either visit and just enjoy the atmosphere and conversation with new people or to participate in adapted sessions which are known to stimulate memory, improve mood, and promote wellbeing.
Charity cup
Each year, we run a competition which is open to members of all ages and abilities, and is designed to build friendships and integrate a more sociable club culture prior to the start-up of external competitive leagues, whilst raising vital funds for local or national causes.
It allows people to play bowls and socialise with members of the club who they may not have met previously; and is structured to allow people to play others of a similar ability. It runs over a 6 week period, typically finishing a week before Easter, and participants make a charitable donation to play and can purchase homemade cakes (made by volunteers) with the money again going to charity.
The winner of the charity cup is the person who wins the most games over the 6 weeks and they nominate the charity that will receive the charitable donation. The competition was introduced in 2022 and charitable donations have been made so far to Ukraine and Dementia charities; Parkinsons UK; the paediatric physiotherapy department at Heartlands hospital; and Age UK.
