What is crown green bowling?
Crown green bowling is played on a square grass green with a raised central hump (the "crown"), making the surface uneven and challenging, unlike flat greens. Players aim to roll biased bowls (woods) closer to a smaller target ball (the jack) than their opponents, navigating the slopes and irregularities of the crowned surface to achieve this, making it a game of skill, strategy, and dexterity,
What is short mat bowling?
Short mat bowls is an indoor version of lawn bowls played on a portable mat (around 40-45 ft long) with a central wooden block, requiring players to bowl around the obstacle to get their weighted balls (woods) closer to the target (jack) than their opponents. It's a social, all-ages sport that adapts traditional rules for indoor, community settings, focusing on drawing shots rather than powerful drives due to the central block.
What equipment do I need?
✅ You need a pair of bowls. If you are new to bowling you can use the club's bowls until you are ready to buy your own.
✅ New bowls will usually cost from £150 upwards.
✅ Other equipment you will need include a mat, jack and set of measures, these are all available from the club.
What footwear do I need?
✅ Whilst on the green you must wear flat soles - for example trainers or pumps, this is to prevent damage to the green.
do I need special clothing?
✅ No, casual clothing is fine. In Crown Green bowling it is not customary for players to wear white outfits.
✅ The Club has its own branded sportwear which is often worn by teams competing in league competitions, but this is entirely optional.
does the club provide tuition?
✅ Yes, the Club can arrange coaching on a one to one or group basis for new and less experienced bowlers.
what are the match fees?
✅ To play in any league match, a fee of £2 is payable for each match. There is no charge for playing in any club competition.
How much does it cost to join?
✅ If you would like to play bowls, the annual membership fee is £95, for those under 21 the annual membership is FREE. There is also a one off joining fee of £15 - this covers the cost of a lifetime registration with the British Crown Green Bowling Association.
✅ If you would like a social membership but do not wish to play bowls the annual fee is £17.50. This entitles you to use the clubhouse facilities and reduced ticket prices for social events and activities.
Do I have to join the club before trying bowls?
✅ We encourage people to visit the club several times and experience the game with the support of experienced bowlers before deciding to take on membership.
